55 stars for the tire! -5 stars for mounting!
By C. Kan
I own two pairs of Continental tires. One is Gatorskin and one is Grand Prix. They are very fast, have low rolling resistance, and have amazing grip in wet or dry. However, all the Continental tires are very super damn hard to mount! These are the worst I have ever mounted! Broke 1 Park tool tire level.. and two new 1"-1.25" tubes! TOOK ME 4 HOURS TO MOUNT THESE TIRES! After these tires are mounted, the bead is so tight onto the rim it wont stay true! They hop hop hop when u spin the wheel! The only way to fix this problem is to add 5 psi and push the side to get the tire even again or add 116 psi to stretch the tires a bit. If you planning to get these tires I hope you also order the Kool Stop Bead Jack (which I order after I found out how painful to mount) OR get the kevlar one. One week after I mounted these tires on my old wheel, I bought new wheelset and I WONT MOUNT IT AGAIN WITHOUT THE KOOL STOP BEAD JACK!

1great tire - for about 1 event!
By J. Elliott
These are a very light weight tire, especially for a wire bead offering. They are DIRECTIONAL, which is not readily apparent - one side wall has the direction of rotation arrow stamped on the case. The tread has 2 small dimples, presumably wear indicators. They are marked as 'hand made in Germany'. I love this tire for the cornering, road feel, and low rolling resistance. I have used Stelvios, Duranos, Kojaks, Scorchers, Marathon Racers, Primo Comets - and this tire has the performance of a Stelvio with the comfort of a Kojak.

Only one problem. They are FRAGILE, and poorly made, at least the 2010 'Black Chili' samples I used. I have had 6 of them in a year - it should be noted that Continental did stand behind them and replaced the failures. On the first ride, a crit, the tire completely de-laminated on the first lap, tread came away from the carcass of the tire and before I could stop it exploded. The replacement arrived, and was bulged on the side on the first inflation. A replacement for that one lasted a month, before bulging on the tread (thump thump thump). This was 3 months into the experience. The next 2 tires lasted about 6 months before one failed - delaminating on the sidewall. The replacements were still in use until today. This morning, one of the tires (about half worn according to the wear indicator dots) started to unravel threads along the sidewall, just popping out of the rubber casing!

Wear has been OK, but the best of the ones I tried is not a very round tire, and not especially true on the rim, either. I never took these over 100psi, and, couldn't ever find any signs of road cuts, stone bruising, or anything else that would have caused these failures. All these were used on the front of my ICE Vortex trike, and the sidewall de-laminations and uravelling threads in the casings have been on the inner side of the tire - not the side that could rub or hit anything. I don't know if these problems are unique to use of these tires on a trike, but I haven't had any issues with other brands.

These tires were the 2010 black chili tires, and my experiences date from April 2010 to 7/4/2011, but all the tires have been 2010 models. Unless Continental has seriously addressed these issues, I wouldn't buy them again. I would consider these a race day tire, not a touring or commuter tire at all, based on my past experiences. I would really like to have these work, since my previous favorite, the Stelvio, is no longer made. I hope that Continental has seriously improved them for 2011, but I won't buy them again until I see some VERY good reviews from a lot of users.

5Good tire, tight wire.
By robert easterday
Good tires. You may need to stretch the wire or get a helper to put them on the first time as the wire is tight.
